How might we build a tech community attractive enough for a company that need to hire 300+ developpers over the next 3 years ?
Research
From the stakeholder's words, having 70% of their staff being external in some departments was not a fertile ground for a strong community, especially when the company is having a tough time hiring developpers through their online platform.
Still according to him, it's mostly due to the company's policy, that can be perceived as old fashioned (low flexibility, waterfall projects, vertical organization...) compared to startups/scale ups that are more attractive to developers.
Therefore, the research focus was to understand what mattered the most for a job-seeking developer digging the internet, and the impact on the job market.
Insights from desk research and interviews:
- Lack of challenges keeps them away from big companies;
- Life/work balance is non negotiable
- They seek responsibilities in meaningful projects
- They feel more support in tech companies
- The need for transparency regarding stacks
Primary user
Our primary user is a full-stack developer in his mid-20s/early 30s. During their 5 years of activity, he worked for several companies, including a large group, which he has a mixed feelings about.
Curious and committed, he is looking to take part in impactful projects with a team that shares his philosophy and see the fruits of their work benefit others. Every two years, his curiosity and his prospects of evolution push him to seek new challenges and export his skills to the most attractive companies.
As part of Bpifrance.io, the company needs to a way to refresh their image because they are currently not meeting developpers' expectations
Solution / Applications
Prototype:
Through usability tests and workshops with actual developers, the new page's structure emerged and had to highlight the expectations of the job seekers, by order of relevance (Company's values, roles, stacks...)
On a visual standpoint, the aim was to reuse graphic elements not too far from their current brand identity while making the page desirable enough to retain enough attention from the job-seekers, statistically more attracted to startups.
Testing
A desirability testing was performed on the prototype and the most reccuring words describing it were "attractive", "fun", "disruptive", "tech" and "innovative".
Impacts / Success Metrics
- Can we see an increase in page visits?
- Can we see an increase in redirections to the job offers page?
- Can we see an increase in internal hirings?
